석사학위를 전공이 기계공학쪽이시면 장학금을 받고 미국에서
공부하실 기회가 다른과보다 더 많으니 이점을 꼭 알아두세요
미국은 학비가 대략 2~5만불 정도하니까 생활비까지 합치면 대략 대학원 과정 마칠때까지 억이상
깨집니다.
그러니 장학금은 꼭받아야 겠지요. 유학생 이라도 연구분야의 대학원 이상은
학부와 달리 장학금 해택이 많이 있고요.

3학년이시면 늦지 않으셨구요.
필요한것들은 어느 학교로 갈건지 먼저 맘을 정하셔야 합니다.
토플점수 -대략 250점(600점) cbt로 바뀐 점수제 일때 250점 을 받아두셔야 안전합니다.
최소 213점이여도 갈 수 는 있지만 다른지원자도 더 높고, 장학금을 못 받으실 수도 있고
좋은 학교는 250점 이상입니다. (공부에 필요한 기간 3개월-자신이 토익한 700점 이상일 경우-내지는 영어에 꾸준한 관심을 가지고 있었을 경우)
GRE- Gre는 미국 대학원 시험인데 토플시험장에서 같이 봅니다. 우리나라고 따지면 국어랑 수학보는것처럼 보일텐데 버벌,수학, 작문 시험 3가지 와 선택으로 자기 전공을 시험봅니다.
미국애들이 보는 시험이기때문에 어려움의 정도는 토플과 비교할수 조자 없고요. 토플을 마치셨다면
그때 도전하셔야 할 듯합니다. (공부기간 3개월~6개월)- 기간은 학교다니면서가 아니고 이것에만 고3때처럼 수능준비하듯 매달릴 경우 이고, 기간은 제 주위분들을 보고 대략 산출한것임.

1. 유학 준비기간
유학관련책이나 장기적으로 계획한 사람들은 미국유학의 석박사과정 준비의 경우 보통 1년을 준비한다고 합니다.
이는 영어시험준비 6개월정도 apply 및 서류준비 3-4개월, 기타 어드미션 받고 출국전까지 2-3개월, 어학및 기타
생활적인 문제 해결등으로 이야기하는것 같습니다. 영어시험준비만 어느정도 해결되면, 서류준비나 기타 준비등은
자기노력하에 충분히 단축시킬수 있다고 생각하구요. 대체로 1년여정도를 생각하시면 될듯 싶어요.
2. 미국학기제도에 따른 마스터플랜
미국의 학기제도는 크게 가을학기와 봄학기, 기타 여름학기로 구별됩니다. 우리나라와 마찬가지로,
학기(semester)도 대부분이고, quarter나, session등으로 구별하는경우도 많으니, 학교마다 요집요강을 잘
살펴보셔야 됩니다. 대체로 석박사과정의 경우는 가을학기시작이 보편적이라 할 수 있고요, 봄학기는 박사과정은
거의 힘들다고 보셔야 할겁니다.석사과정의 경우는 일부학교에서 봄학기 입학이 가능하지만, 커리큘럼상
가을학기에 입학하시는것이 여러모로 유리하다고 생각해요.
우선, 학교에서 요구하는 deadline(입학마감일)에 비추어 계획을 작성하시는게 좋습니다.
1) 가을학기(fall)의 경우 데드라인
장학금이 걸려있는 international student의 경우 2/1이 대부분이고, 조금 빠르면 1/15, 빠르면 이전해
12/15일도 있습니다. 인문사회계는 보통 2/1이 대부분 이고, 이공대는 조금 빨라질수 있습니다.
대학별로 차이가 있으니 check를 꼭 하셔야 됩니다. deadline이 지나면, 거의 소용이 없다고 봐야하니까요.
장학금과 상관없는 경우는 이보다 좀 늦어질수있으나, 장학금수여와 상관없이, 대체로 이때쯤에 모든 원서를
보내는것이 좋습니다.
예) 그러니까 2000년 가을학기를 목표로 하면, 2000년 2/1 이 deadline이 된다는 이야기죠.
2) 봄학기(summer)의 경우 데드라인
7-8월초가 deadline이 될수 있습니다. 나머지는 가을학기 와 시스템이 동일하구요. 될수있으면 봄학기는
international 한테는 별로 유리하지 않구요. 심지어 안뽑는경우도 부지기수입니다. 커리큘럼상에도 좀 불리할겁니다.
예) 과목중 1,2같이 이어지는 과목의 경우 2부터 들어야하는 경우도 생기니까요.
3) 일반적인 마스터플랜
STEP 1 : 유학결정 (교수님과의 조언과 많은 대화, 진로선택결정)
STEP 2 : 학교선정 : internet,peterson guide등 관련서적참조
고합빌딩에 가면 관련서적을 쉽게 볼 수 있다.
학교 ranking이외에도 curriculum, faculty, 교육환경, 외국인
분포수, 관련연구등등을 잘 참고하여 자기에 맞는 학교선정중요 (8-12개학교 취사선택)
STEP 3 : 시험준비 : TOEFL, GRE, GMAT
미국에서는 ETS 에서 직접 보내는것을 요구하는 경우가 많다. 이는 추후에 설명예정.
이 기간 (1달정도)과 성적표가 오는 기간을 잘 고려해서, 적절히 시험성적표를 소지하고 있어야 한다.
* TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, 여권의 영문이름은 모두 일치 주의
* TOEFL - 10월 양호, 늦어도 11월시험까지 완료. (성적표 발송기간 - 시험후 약40일 소요)
유효기간 시험일로부터 2년. TSE,TWE요구하는가를 잘 살필 것.
* G R E - CAT시험으로 바뀐뒤 매달 1회실시 가능
10월에 1번, 11월에 한번 응시하는것이 바람직.
늦어도 11월, 인문사회계는 학교에 따라 12월까지 가능.(성적표 발송기간 -시험후 약30일소요)
유효기간 시험일로부터 5년. (전공시험)을 보는경우는 위의 시험을 미리 끝내나야 한다.
Subject는 보통 1년에 1-2번밖에 기회가 없다.(보통11월이며, 이것은 아직까지 Paper시험이다
* GMAT - MBA의 경우 ESSAY비중이 크므로, 11-12월까지 완료. 바람직.
시험이 어느정도 되면, ESSAY에 많은 투자요구됨. (성적표 발송기간 - 시험후 20-30일)
유효기간 시험일로부터 5년.
STEP 4 : 입학원서 신청: internet,fax,mail 이용(많은 학교의 원서를 받아둔다)
Internet의 e-mail의 경우 몇번 보내는것이 좋다. 가장 빠르나 확인을 안하는 학교가 있다.
Mail이 시간이 좀 걸려도 가장 확실하다.
원서나 기타 대학별 자료를 보고, 개인적 CONTACT 이나 관련 학교에 꾸준히 관심을 보임.
STEP 5 : 원서작성 : 11월말 ~ 1월 중순
발송원서를 받고 작성, 요즘엔 학교site에 pdf화일로 올려져 있는경우도 많으니, 급하면 DOWN 으로 해결.
원서작성 및 기타 서류작성, 11월쯤 시험이 끝나면, 추천서를 미리 받아둔다.
오래걸리면 1달이 걸릴수도 있으니까!
기타 제반서류등 작성에 총력을 기울인다. 학업계획서 작성과, 기타 Performance, portfolio등
기타 자기 PR할수있는 모든자료를 한 package에 담는다.
DHL,FEDEX로 보내는것이 좋음(1-2일 소요)
그리고 원서는 DEADLINE이전 가급적 빨리보내는것이 좋다
STEP 6 : 입학허가서 취득 : 3-4월말, 늦으면 5월초 (I-20 FORM)
STEP 7 : 여권,비자 신청: 6월초부터 7월초까지
STEP 8 : 출국 - 7월초부터 7월말
적응기간을 두고 보름정도 여유를 두고 출발하는것이 좋다. 숙식결정에 따라 유동적

1. 추천서양식 or A4
추천서 준비요령
추천서는 아시는바와 같이 교수님의 절대적인 권한입니다. 따라서, 학생은 해당학교의 form이 있는 경우, applicant부분만 작성하고, recommender부분은 교수님에 전적으로 위임한다는 연방법에 sign하게 되어 있습니다. 그러나, 교수님이 추천서를 작성해보시지 않은분이나, 유학을 잘 가지않는 지방대학의 경우에는 어려움이 많을줄 압니다. 따라서, 교수님과 학생이 같이 작성하는 경우도 있고, 때로는 심지어 좀 심하지만, 개인이 작성해서 교수님께만 받는경우도 있는것 같습니다. 개인적으로는 이해가 가지않고, 그런경험이 없어서 여기서는 일반적으로 추천서를 교수님께 드리는 과정전까지 준비요령을 적고, 기타 경우에는 도움이 될까해서, recommendation letter 예를 싣어보고자 하니, 후자의 분들은 참고하시길 바랍니다.
1. 추천서양식 or A4
학교별로 추천서양식이 있는학교와 특별히 언급이 없는학교로 크게 나뉩니다.
추천은 추천자의 고유권한 이기때문에 학생은 원칙상으로 양식만 첨부해서 추천자에게 건네줄뿐 그 나머지는 추천인이 모든것을 관리한후 seal해서 직접 학교로 보내거나, 다른 것과 함께 package해서 보내도록 합니다.
양식있는 학교들을 일단 분류해서 양식을 구해서 정리하시고, 양식없는 학교들은 교수님께 '자유양식'으로 해달라고 부탁하시면 됩니다. 그러면 대체로 A4에 print해서 주실것으로 생각됩니다.
2. 추천서양식의 경우(Form)
추천서 양식을 down 받건, 직접 편지로 받아보면, 보통 일반대학원은 3장, 경영대학원(MBA)는 2-3장을 한학교에서 요구하고 있습니다. 학교를 여러곳쓰는경우 3장씩, 10개학교를 보낸다고 하면, 30장의 추천서가 필요하는등 추천서 쓰는것도 쉽지 않은일입니다.
양식을 보면,
to be completed by applicant 부분 - 학생이 기입하는부분
to the recommmender - 추천인이 기입하는부분
으로 나뉩니다. 추천이 기입부분은 교수님이 알아서 하실테고, 학생기입부분에서 해야할일이 한가지 있습니다.
이름,sign이외에 연방법이 규정한 이 추천서를 waiver하는것에 동의할것인가에 대한 답변입니다.
대체로 I do _________________, I do not _______________________
이렇게 칸이 그려져있습니다. 학생들은 반드시 I do 빈칸에 사인하셔야 됩니다. 내용은 읽어보면, 이 추천내용의 모든것을 추천인에게 맡긴다는 내용이고, 여러분은 미리보지 않는다고 약속하는것입니다. 연방법에 의하면 여러분이 볼수도 있지만, 그렇게 되면, 그시간부터 이 추천서는 무효화가 되고, 이 추천인을 믿지 않는것으로 간주되어 그 추천서는 효력을 발생할 수 없게 되니, 반드시 잘 읽어보시고, waiver에 동의한다는 의사표시를 해주어야 합니다.
3. 추천서는 누구에게 받는게 좋고, 내용은?
추천서는 교수님이 좋고, 직장상사가 나쁘고, 꼭 그런관점이 될필요는 없습 니다. 가장 좋은 것은 자기를 가장 오랫동안 잘 알아왔고, 자기의 장단점을 정확하게 평가해 줄수 있는 사람한테서 받는것이 좋습니다.
일반대학원이나 연구소에 계신분들은 관련 교수님이나, 전문계통에 종사하시는 박사급이상의 연구원에게 받는것이 좋습니다. 대체로 3년이상 알고 지내던 교수님의 추천을 받으면 좋으며, 그렇지 않더라도 가장 구체적으로자기를 추천해줄수 있는 사람을 찾으십시요.
또 하나의 tip이 있자면, 해당학교 출신의 추천자를 찾는것입니다. 그 학교의 alumni출신이면, 절대적이 아니지만, 상대적으로 호감을 갖게되고, 선배들이 잘 닦아놓고 졸업하였으면, 좋은 인상을 풍길수 있습니다.
추천서의 내용은 사실 교수님의 절대 권한이기에 우리는 알수없어야 정상입니다. 그러나, 일부 학교에서는 외국에 갔다오시지 않는 국내박사의 추천을 받아할 때도 있을거고, 추천서를 영어로 제대로 써보지않으신분들의 경우 학생보고 써오라고 하는경우도 종종 있는것 같습니다.
사실 전 개인적으로 이것은 매우 위험하고 기본이 잘못됐다고 생각합니다. 적어도 외국갔다오고, 잘 모르는 학생이라도 외국나가서 공부하는게 쉽지 않는다는 사실을 안다면, 최소한 추천서는 정성껏 써주어야 한다는 것이 저의 지론이고, 학생에게 추천을 맡긴다는것은 저로써는 상상조차 할 수 없는일입니다. 하지만, 현실적으로 여건이 그렇다면야, 교수님과 상의해서 협의하에 쓰도록 하십시요.
그냥, 칭찬일색으로만 나열하지말고, 구체적인 연구활동이나, 학업수상경력 등 공부하고자 하는 분야에 대한 PR 및 학업동기능력,리더쉽능력등이 구체적으로 언급되면, +작용을 하는것으로 알고 있습니다.
4. 첨부방법
보통 추천서양식과 뒤에 A4로 별지로 추천내용을 첨부하여 보내는것이 상례이구요. 양식이 없으면, 그냥 A4 별지만 보내면 될것 같네요. A4양식으로 출력할때는 학교영문이름이 들어간 LETTER지로 출력하는것이 한층 신뢰감을 더합니다. 교수님이 아시지만, 혹시라도 해서 필요하시면 참고하십시요.
5. 교수님한테 드릴경우 준비할 것
추천서 양식을 깨끗이 정리하고, 항공우편봉투을 구입하여 해당학교를 TYPE하거나, 손으로 깨끗이 써서 같이 봉투를 첨부해드립니다. 이는 교수님이 추천서를 작성한후, 봉투에 넣어서 SEAL(겉봉에 풀칠하고, SIGN하는것을 의미합니다.)해서 다시 학생에게 전달해줍니다.
시간은 충분히 2주정도의 시간을 드리고, 언제까지 보내야 한다는 것을 알려드려야 부담을 덜수 있습니다. 더우기 10개학교 이상의 학교를 부탁하려면, 교수님께 상당한 부담이 될수 있습니다. 따라서, 잘 아는 교수님께 미리 잘 꼬셔두세요.^^ 건투를 빕니다.
6. 추천서 작성예
다음은 전자공학과에 지원하는 학생의 추천서를 하나 공개한다.
이외에도 예문을 구하고 싶으면, 유토동(tf)에 가면 다양한 예문들이 있다.
단지 주의할것은, 너무 형언할정도의 막연한 칭찬만 하는 추천서는 실제 생활하고 있는 선배들이 그렇지 못하다는것에 입증됨으로써 미국교수들은 한국교수들의 형용사로 그득한 추천서를 잘 신뢰하지 못한다. 보다 구체적이고, 어떤분야에서 이학생이 우수하고, 어떠한 장단점을 가지고 어떠한 실험을 해봤으며, 발전가능성을 가지고 있는 학생인가를 유의깊게 본다는 것으로 알려지고 있다.

학과별로 site 주소를 check하셔서 각 학교별 요강에 들어가 다양한 정보를 접하시는게 최고입니다.
유학원에 가면 자기만의 know-how처럼 이야기를 하지만, 결국엔 가장 update한 자료는 인터넷에 다 있습니다.
자기목숨이 걸린 유학인데, 자기자신이 직접 뛰어다니면서 틈틈이 자료를 수집해서 나가십시요.

학교 RANKING
이 정도가 되지않을까 싶다. 중요한것은 역시 학교 RANKING보다는 얼마나 자기자신이 만족감을 느끼면서
생활하며, 다양한 교수진과 커리큘럼, 경제 적인 여건등에서 상대적으로 자기자신에게 유리한 학교와 학과를
선택할 필요가 있다고 하겠다. 학교는 TOP5이더라도 교수진이 안맞거나, 지나친 생활고로 transfer하는
학생들도 부지기수로 발생할 경우가 많기 때문이다. 보다 신중한 학교선택이 필요하다.
일단은 대학원서를 받아놓고, 학교에서 요구하는 수준등이나 중요시하는것을 다양한루트를 통해서 수집하도록
노력하자. 지나친 영어점수를 요구하거나, international 에 상대적으로 차별적인 인상을 가지는 학교는 제외시키자
이런학교는 설사 어드미션을 받았을지라도, 학과분위기에서 왕따 당할 우려가 많으며, 지도교수와의 원만한관계에
힘이겨워 심지어 최악에는 학위취득에 상당한 타격을 입힐수 있다.
"지나간 선배들은 못해냈지만, 난 열심히 하면 할수있을거야..까짓것 왜 못해!!" 이런생각은 위험한 생각이다.
미국교수들중에는 동양인을 유독 싫어하는 교수도 상당수 존재한다. 이런 교수를 만나면, 학점은 물론 졸업하기가
쉽지 않다. 아무튼 이와관련 기준을 바탕으로 약 8-12개정도의 학교를 선택하는것이 좋다.
2. 입학원서 요청하기
각 대학 입학원서는 2년단위로 보통 작성한다.
예를 들어, 1999-2000년 등 한번 brocher를 만들면, 2년을 사용하는데, 원서요청에 맞추어 보통 7월정도에 나오는 경우가 많다. 작년경우를 그대로 사용하는 경우는 6월정도에 신청해도 무난하겠지만, 일단은 원서요청을 시도해 보자. 미국은 반드시 원서요청을 하면, 자기학교에 관심있는 internaitional prospective student로 분류하며, 언젠가는 반드시 원서나 기타 정보등을 수시로 보내준다.
예외) 학교마다 competitive한 학교에 따라 일정의 deposit을 요구하는 학교들이 있다. 이공대의 경우 GEORGIA -TECH이나 MIT등의 경우도 일정요금을 원서요청시 요구한다. 이는 그냥 한번 보내는 학생들을 방지하기 위해 꼭 경쟁력있는 학생을 유치하기 위한 전략이다. 그만큼 자기네 학교들의 brocher,catalog를 신중하게 만들기도한다. 또한, 일정 toefl,gre의 일정점수를 요구하기도 한다. 그러나, 이것은 대충 적어서 보내면 큰일이 없을것이다. 확인할길이 없으니까.. 또한, International의 경우 심지어 원서를 아예 안보내는 경우도 어떤 해는 존재한다. 그러므로, 꼭 원하는 학교라면, 다양한 방식을 통해서, 원서를 구하도록 시도해야 한다.

INTERNET을 이용하는 방법
각 대학site로 들어가면, 대학원 Officer나 각 department에 원서요청form을 올려놓은곳에 직접해도 되고,
아니면 admissions office에 직접 메일을 보내서 원서를 요청해도 된다.
주의) e-mail을 확인하지 않는 대학도 있으니 여러번 보내는 것이 좋다.
편지를 이용하는 방법
가장 확실한 방법으로 각 대학별site로 들어가거나 책자를 이용하여, 주소를 확인한다.
FAX를 이용하는 방법
각 대학 fax번호를 알고 보내는 방법인데, 어쩌면 가장 빠른방법이긴하나,
간혹 접수가 제대로 이루어지지 않는경우도 있다.
결론적으로 인터넷과, 편지(mail)을 병행하는것이 좋다. 인터넷과 기타 방법은 몇번 시도하는것이 실수를
줄이는 방법이다. 현지에 있는 학생이나, 유학원등을 통해서 구할수도 있으나, 이는 일정 비용이 들어가거나,
쉽게 원하는 학교를 구하기가 어려운 단점이 있다.
2) 원서요청편지 실례(편지를 이용할 경우)
원서를 똑같은 양식으로 보낼때에는 한글의 mail-merge기능을 이용하면 여러학교를 쉽게 보낼수 있다.
시험성적, 학점등을 더 자세히 기재하고 영문성적표 사본도 보내도 좋다고 함. 그러나 반드시 require은 아님

자기소개서(Study Plan , Statement of Purpose, Personal Statement)
자기소개서 및 학업계획서는 주로 Statement of Purpose(SOP)로 줄여서 주로 언급되며, Personal Statement로 표현되기도 한다. 외국대학의 입학사정중 성적을 제외한 추천서와 가장 중요한 서류중의 하나임으로 지원자는 매우 신중한 작성을 요한다. 외국학생들은 시험공부를 1-2달하고, 이 자기소개서나 기타 서류작성에 서너달을 투자할만큼, 우리나라학생과는 달리 그만큼 공을 들인다는 사실을 명심해야 할것이다. 특히 MBA와 같은 미국의 경영대학원에 지원하는 경우, essay비중이 입학사정에 절대적으로 작용하므로, 시험과 버금가는 충분한 정보와 노력으로 각 대학별 주제별 에세이에 철저히 준비해야 한다.
1. 얼마나 작성해야 하는가?
보통 SOP는 350-500자를 대부분 요구하며, 학교에 따라서, 1000자정도를 요구하는 학교도 있다. MBA의 경우는 각 factor에 대한 구체적으로 질문하며, 서너장씩 작성하는 경우도 생긴다. 쉽게 말해서 일반대학원은 위에서 말한 내용을 포괄적으로 잘 구성해서 A4 1장반에서 2장정도로 잘 요약해서 써야하고, MBA의 경우는 특정주제를 띠는 factor별로 자세하게 작성하면 된다. TOP 10 Business school에 대해서는 essay작성에만 2-3달이상 공을들여야 한다고 알려져 있으며, 최근 그 중요성이 부쩍 강조되고 있다. 여기서는 보편적인 statement of purpose에 회자되는 이야기를 중심으로 살펴보기로 한다.
2. SOP 에 들어가는 주요구성
지원하고자 하는 학교의 faculty와 curriculum을 잘 검토한후, 각 교수들의 관심분야와 연구분야를 세밀히 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 해당학과의 교수들의 profile을 최대한 활용하고, 주요저널에 발표된 관심분야의 교수들의 동향을 메모해 나가는 습관을 가지자.
예) 분량은 약 500자 정도 기준일경우

지원하는 대학마다 자기소개서에 대한 간단한 예시문이 있다. 이를 한번 잘 살펴보고, 나름대로 그 내용이 자기소개서에 포함되어 있는가를 검토해보는 지혜가 필요하다. 몇개대학을 예로 소개한다.

4. 실례를 통한 주요내용
누차말하지만, 반드시 이런내용이 포함되고, 이렇게 써야한다는 법칙은 없다. 학교별로 안내문을 잘 숙지하고, 자기의 특징과 상황, 포부등을 한국말로 충분히 구성해보고, 영역한후, native speaker에게 교정을 받는등 자기가 하고싶은말을 충분히 전달하고 있는가를 검토한후 보내길 바란다.
다음은 미국 UCLA,UIUC,Carnegi Mellon,Taxas A&m 등에서 admission을 받은 sop예문을 필자나름대로 분석하고, 주석을 달아본 것이다.
성장배경 및 가정환경(우연성)
미국사람들의 특징은 자기의 관심분야에 대한 동기부여가 주요관심사가 된다. 앞에 우리나라의 소개서처럼 학교가 어디고, 아버님의 고향은 어디고 식의 구구절절한 집안배경을 설명할 필요는 없다. 그보다는, 간단히 나의 주변환경에 대한 background가 진로와 어떤상관관계를 보였는가를 자연스럽게 때로는 우연성을 띠는것같은 인상을 주면 무난하다고 본다. 표현은 대체로 since ... , I have been exposed to... or interested to.. have closely connected with..... dates back to my junior school..식으로 나의 어린시절은 전공을 선택하기 위해 난 여러환경에 노출되어 있다거나, 관심에 빠져있었다는 식의 글이 자연스럽다.
I was first exposed to chemistry while studying it as a required course in
junior-high school. As I learned about science, I came to realize that the
study of chemistry consists of much more than mere knowledge;
Since my early childhood, I have been exposed to Quantitative method.
It derives from that my teachers in Junior & Senior high school were
mathematician, who influenced me naturally while in responsibility in my
class. I always remember my teachers helped me in applying of logical
method in mathematics to life style more than digital meaning and I had a
chronical experience of having good grades in school in mathematics contest
My interest in engineering dates back to my elementary school. Having had
a series of interest in making and assembling miniature toys and fixing
household appliances, I wanted to be excellent engineer. At the same time,
my parents not only encouraged me to sharpen up my curiosity in mechanical
things, but father,particularly,showed me an exciting world of engineering.
My father is a recoginzed civil engineer.
My life has been closely conneted with the atmosphere and I always enjoy
a variety of changes of weather whatever they are gentle or furious.
My contact with the atmosphere was very special. At nine years old.
Interestingly, it was shiny in my uppersky while raining far beyond the
Mountain. Far away, the dark clouds seemed to move slowly, but later I had
to run as fast as possible to avoid getting wet. After all, I got all wet
and that clouds passed me in a moment. It is still mysterious that such
a small and handy clouds could have swiftly run away. What happened to me
at that moment has never left me since and I came to have a habit to look
at the sky. I feel comfortable when I think, see and touch atmosphere, my
lovely friend 'atmosphere'.
전공선택 및 대학활동
위와같은 동기나 backgound가 대학의 전공을 선택하게 되었고, 대학내의 활동에 영향을 주었다는 내용이다. 지기만의 대학활동중 특이사항등을 중심으로 적는것이 좋다. 구구절절한 내용을 적을려고 하지말고, 강한인상을 받았던 과목이나, 선생님이나 책에서 감명을 받았다거나, 써클활동등에서 경험했던 기억들, 자원봉사했던 이야기들, 사회단체에 참여한 경험등등.. 전공이 상이하다면, 전공을 바꾸게 된 동기(추천이나, 기타 매스미디어, 사회활동에서 느꼈던점) 학업과 자신의 진로에 간접적,직접적으로 도움이 되면서 열심히 생활해온 모습들을 보여주는 난이라 하겠다. 꼭 하고 싶은말을 압축적으로 표현하도록 노력하자.
This realization intrigued and inspired me to pursue the systematic study
of chemistry at University. During my freshman year, and throughout my coll
ege career, I found I had a great enthusiasm for the study of chemistry.
I diligently pursued my class assignments and avidly read many relevant
books and periodicals. Although I often pursued my interests beyond the
required work, I nevertheless found that I wanted a knowledge of chemistry
sufficient to allow me to cope with more than just theoretical problems.
For this reason, I am presently seeking to continue my studies at the
graduate level.
My scholastic background in chemistry, which consists of theoretical,
experimental and advanced courses, has provided me with a solid basis upon
which to continue my studies. Morever, in addition to the basic undergrad-
-uate chemistry course (i.e. physical, organic, analytical, quantum
chemistry, and biochemistry, etc), I expanded my background by attending
extracurricular research presented by the faculty of our Department.
I've also interested in a variety of chances to experience public affairs
which give service to citizen, thanks to growing up under typical public
officials family. That made me major in public adminitration where I could
study in a variety of mechanism in organization & decision-making theory,
personnel system, financial system related to decision-making in public
organization.
First, the fact public organization has somewhat different situation with
corporation was interesting to me, but as time goes by to study deeply,
it was far more fascinating to me that if not understanding properly in
current and characters in financial system, public organization had hard
time in maximizing the efficiency and productivity, and only when
financial structure of organization and accurate Accounting-auditing run
properly, it could have good influence in final decision-making.
This interest let me have 'A' in all classes of Planning and Finance,
Financial administration whose main topic was accounting and control.
To fulfil my childhood dream of being an engineer, I managed to enter one
of the toughest institution known as Seoul National University.
Less than 1% of high school gradute can enter the SNU. At the universtity,
I majored Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering, and I will be graduating
from there this comming February. As my academic record indicates, I feel
that I have successfully acquired a basic foundation of engineering
discipline. In addition, I believe I have solidified a breadth of
engineering discipline by studying other subjects such as 'manufacturing
process', 'data structure', 'database' and a number of subjects
in humanities.
During my junior years, I strategically put my efforts to understand the
basis of dynamics, as well as learning a variety of applications in
computer programings. Then among many major courses, I studiously
participated in the courses of dynamic meteorlogy, weather analysis,
mesoscale meteorology, chemistry of atmosphere, and general circulation
of atmosphere. But in case of the theory of 'predictability limit'
at the class of dynamic meteorology, I learned to accept the limitations
of atmospheric science.
In taking that course, however, I really liked to forecast by using weather
data and with an analysis of atmosphere. Research topic for tornadoes was
particulary attractive for me and I even struck with admiration to get to
know the National Severe Storm Laboratory(NSSL)
while preparing a term paper for mesometeorology, I often dream of working
at the NSSL as a researcher.
With passion and love for atmospheric science, I made up mind to keep on
studying this for the rest of my life, especially mesoscale meteorlogy.
In my senior year, professor Noh who emphasized the importance of computer
modeling in meteorology, severly pushed me to do programing by giving
assignments to complete more than thirty programs. I had to live with my
computer throughout the whole semester to finish all those programs.
Finally, I got 'A' grade in that course
(the numerical analysis of atmosphere) and gained confidence of programing.

자기의 특기사항을 PR하는 난이다. 학회할동의 장이나, 기타 작은 써클이나, 실험활동에서 적극적으로 활동했던 경험, 지도교수와 참여했던 실험들, 학회발표참여했던 경험, 수상경력, 대내외 장학금수여 사례, Teaching assistant, Reasearch Assistant경험, 자원봉사등 기타 사회적활 동 경력등 자신을 적절히 PR할수있는 내용을 담는것이 좋다.
① During my junior year I joined a lab-rotation program entitled " The study
of the model complexes of Ni(II) - containing coenzyme F430" Staying in the
laboratory, I was deeply involved in biominetic corphin macrocyclic ligand
synthesis and complexation. Lab works were pretty much focused on the
multinuclear multidimensional NMR data acquisition, processing, data
analysis and NMR-based structure determination. Academic achievement was
good, so I was able to present results in the Campus Academic Conference
held at the University. I gained further research experience through my
undergraduate thesis work. Early in my senior year, I began work on "The
model complexes of superoxide dismutase(SOD)" Under the supervision of my
faculty advisor of Inorganic Chemistry division.
This research consisted of literature search, synthesis of metal complexes,
structural analysis using X-ray crystallography, sand examinations of
spectroscopic and electrochemical properties. At eh 76th Korean Chemical
Society Annual Convention held on October, 19945, I formally reported the
progress of this work.

Most of all, academical opportunity of changing my major to business
field was made by my tutor in charge Prof, ........
He, after studying in U.C Berkeley(Ph, D) was one of few experts
in connecting with his major with public organization in the faculty of
public administration in KOREA UNIV in South Korea.
Through expert theories and cases-analysis in his class, I could have faith
in that we need more experts who can evaluate the auditing about business
area based on in public or private organization with the stream of
international accounting criteria in 21th century.
Having part-time Job in KPC(Korea Productivity Corporation), after
graduating, made me feel how important role the auditing to understand the
efficiency of organization do and how effective expert skill is in changing
financial structure to the better one in person, so frequently put a lot of
importance on financial statements and auditing through accounting-related
materials.
③ During my undergraduate, I explored extra curriar activities pertinent to
engineering. From freshman year, I participated in Seoul National
University Computing Club and promote club activity by being in charge
of having public relation responsibility. Another significant action is
that I managed to publish'Mathematica'in my junior year. With two other
club mate, we recognized the need of software package known as
'Mathematica'in Korea engineering climate. With this recognitioin,
we translated usage instruction and simplified user interface and
re edited for Korean audiences. Still another signicant activity is
that of constructing and installing database for the ...Co. Ltd..

저널이나 학회에서 감명깊었던 교수나, 대학내에서 마음에드는curriculum 실험계획, 기타 학계의 영향, 한국에서 하기힘든 분야의 도전하고 싶은 희망, 학위과정이후 자신의 계획, 졸업후 한국에서의 활동계획등...........
자신의 향후계획과 이학교에 들어가고 하는 의지등을 표현하는 란이다. 지금까지 위에서 서술해온 acedemical background, social background가 이 학위과정을 이수하는데, 어려움이 없고 그동안 꾸준히 준비해왔다는 마음가짐과 성공적으로 이수하기위해서 열심히 노력해서, 학교의 alumni로써 개인과 학교, 국가를 위해 성실한 학자가 되겠다는 의지표현을 간략하게나마 당차게 표현하면 적절한 +점수를 받을수 있다고 본다.
